Depression is characterized by low mood, an inability to enjoy positive experiences, sadness, or persistent feelings of guilt. A person may also notice increased or decreased appetite and sleep difficulties. When depression is particularly severe, it may be difficult to get out of bed or go to work; everyday activities may seem impossible. Untreated depression tends to become more severe and persistent, so it is best to see a psychotherapist at the first sign of symptoms.
